Victorian Fayre and 2018 Competition Winner

The Civic Society had a stall in the Church Centre during last weekend's Victorian Christmas Fayre in Hartford village. Here is a photo of the stall with Mike Pinchien and Tracey Abbott, two of our trustees.

At the event, we were selling our new 2019 calendars, featuring the winning entries in our recent photo competition. We also took the opportunity to present the overall competition winner with his prize. So, well done, Edward Broadhurst. See the photo below.

December's Litter Pick

Our next litter pick will be on Sunday 9th December at 10.00am.

Meet as usual by the bus stop at the end of Walnut Lane. Just turn up. Everything will be provided for you. We usually take about 90 minutes before calling it a day.

We realise that there are some people who would be interested in litter picking, but who have other commitments on Sunday mornings. We tend to keep to the second Sunday in each month simply because it is easier to organise when dates are not being changed all the time.

However, if there is anyone who would like to do a litter pick on a different day, say as part of a family walk, or while walking the dog or simply in order to “do your bit”, then please feel free to do so. It would be really appreciated. If you want to borrow our litter pickers and high-viz vests and be supplied with some rubbish bags, then please phone Geoff on 01606 74587.

After completing a litter pick, please return the gear you have borrowed and let me know where you picked so that we have an idea of what has been done and what still needs doing. You can also leave the bags of rubbish with me and I will organise their retrieval by the Council.

And finally, please remember that you must take responsibility for your own safety. The roads are busy and beware broken glass and other such nasties.

Photo competition for 2019 Calendar - RESULTS

Our photo competition was judged the other day and we have a winner: Edward Broadhurst, with his picture titled "A Quiet Corner". Well done Sir.

All twelve photos that will appear in next year's HCS Calendar are shown below, followed by a picture of all the 75 entries, displayed ready for the judging.

Some of the other entries will feature on the front cover of the calendar.

You can reserve/pre order a calendar by emailing

The calendars should be available mid October and will be on sale at Elson Newsagent, Hartford Post Office and Littlers Butchers(TBC). They will also be on sale from our Civic Society stall at the Victorian Christmas Fayre. The price will be £5.00, the same as previous years. All proceeds go straight back into the village.

Hartford Civic Society is proud to announce its new library of more than one hundred hardbacks, paperbacks, booklets, brochures and CD-ROMs.

The library items are owned by various Civic Society Trustees. The books cover a wide range of topics, from the history of Cheshire as a whole; the history of Northwich and its surrounding areas - including Hartford; the history of Brunner Mond and ICI and its links to this area; the salt industry in the area and more recent topics of interest.

For now, we are only allowing our books to be borrowed by Civic Society members, so if you are interested in what we have and are not a member, maybe you would like to join us.

To browse the library and borrow books, there is a link entitled "HCS LIBRARY" in the Local History section of the left hand menu on this web page. That link takes you to a page that contains the "Library Catalogue" link. This link takes you to a spreadsheet that lists all the books in the library.

There are four tabs at the foot of the spreadsheet:

INSTRUCTIONS tells you how to use the spreadsheet and how to borrow books.
LIBRARY lists all the books in the main section of the library. They are in date of publication sequence.
SALT lists a number of leaflets on the salt industry, which are also available for borrowing.
OTHERS lists a few special books which the owners would rather not lend out, but which can be viewed with the owner's permission.

The library will continue to grow as we obtain more books in the future. If you have any books you would be willing to donate or lend to the library, please contact our librarian, Geoff Wilde, at or 01606 74587.

We would also like to hear from members with their views on the library and of any ways we can improve the service. Again, contact Geoff.

Happy browsing!
