| Hartford, Whitegate and Vale Royal - author R M
Bevan There are very few books that deal with
Hartford and its past but this excellent and superbly illustrated edition will
be a delight to anybody interested in the history of the area or perhaps
exploring their roots. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book and
the historical facts and accounts are a real bonus.
The publishers also have a number of other books available
dealing with local towns, villages, great families and historical events -
please see their website for a full list.
"This outstanding new book is the latest in C.C. Publishing’s
‘Times Past’ series. Hardback, 110 pages
with over 170 photographs it takes readers on a nostalgic journey
from the historic founding of
Vale Royal Abbey through to the 20th century places and faces of
Hartford and Whitegate. Along the way
a few myths and legends are debunked and the author relates
numerous fascinating stories.
How about the abbey grange linked to George Washington and the
American War of Independence? Or what of Napoleon’s coronation sword and
Whitegate? Then there’s Field Marshall Montgomery and Hartford; Princess
Margaret’s paramour; and the local hostelry that may have inspired a Dickens’
classic. Vale Royal Abbey and the Cholmondeley family, their lives and loves and
nationhood on another continent, have united the villages of Hartford and
Whitegate and provide an intriguing backdrop.
The photographs, amassed by the author over many years, are
astonishing, especially those depicting the construction of Hartford ‘Blue
Bridge’ and Northwich bypass. Further downstream old Hartford Locks and
Marshall’s Arm are featured, whilst the railway illustrations centred upon
Hartford Station and Whitegate Station are veritable gems. A book to treasure."
