Local Studies have completed a major project lasting over 4 years to digitise
the 479 Cheshire tithe maps dating from 1835-1851. These maps were previously
only available to personal visitors and were difficult to handle and conserve.
Not only can these maps be viewed online but they can also be
compared side by side with ordnance survey maps from c1875 and c1910, modern
mapping and aerial photographs. This excellent site also has all the plots
catalogued into a searchable database, making it a treasure trove for local
historians, family history researchers or individuals interested in who owned
their house or land before them.
The tithe apportionments detail land use, ownership and
occupancy for 250,000 plots in Cheshire and offer a unique snapshot in time.
